Auckland Accommodation
Auckland accommodation is available in a wide range of options, depending on your preferences and/or requirements, including price, standard, and how personal you want the hospitality to be.
The various options fit into the following five, broad categories listed in order from the higher priced, to the more budget conscious options, although there is some potential for overlapping in these broad categories.
Luxury resorts and Lodges -
The luxury, smaller, higher priced, top end of the Auckland accommodation market. Including bed & breakfasts, farm and home stays, guest houses, boutique lodges, inns, country hotels and similar establishments providing “home-like” or “character” accommodation. There’s normally a more personal interaction between the guest and the host. Each establishment has it’s own unique qualities and often specialties. This option requires a bit of research to ascertain accurately what is being offered.
Auckland accommodation suitable for – The discerning traveler who wants a personal and luxury exclusive experience.
Hotels -
There are a range of establishments that call themselves Hotels.
But typically they are the higher priced Auckland accommodation option. Auckland Hotels are usually the larger multi level buildings including the well known larger multi national operations. They typically include an accommodation & catering service, with at least one licensed bar and restaurant, on the premises or adjacent, with charge-back facilities, so you get one bill at the end of your stay, rather than a pay per item charging arrangement.
Usually all rooms have tea and coffee-making facilities and there is on-site management staff at all times. Usually all operations provide breakfast, whether in a restaurant or breakfast room, or via room
service. Some hotels also have conference and banqueting facilities.
A standard room usually has one room for both sleeping and living, with an en-suite bathroom.
A suite will usually have a living room and at least one separate bedroom,and possibly a mini kitchen.
Hotel apartments usually have both mini kitchens and laundry facilities.
Auckland accommodation suitable for -
If you don’t need parking space and want to be centrally located in or near the central business, entertainment areas, then this option may suit you best.
Inns, Motels, Bed & Breakfast -
These the usually mid priced Auckland accommodation option. It includes motels, motor lodges, motor inns, motel apartments, serviced apartments and serviced holiday cottages.
Units are serviced daily or as otherwise agreed with the guest, and are self-contained providing at least tea and coffee-making facilities and a private or en-suite bathroom. Frequently, cooking facilities (microwave and/or range cooker ) are provided within the accommodation unit, so guests can prepare their own meals independently. Milk, tea, coffee and sugar are usually supplied for guests’ immediate use.
Off-street car parking and all bedding and linen are provided. Communal laundry facilities are available and some units may have their own laundry facilities.
Units may have TVs, phone, iron and modem for computer use. At extra cost,breakfasts can usually be ordered the night before.
There is a responsible person constantly in charge on site. A studio has one room for both living and sleeping. Other units can have one or more separate bedrooms.
Auckland accommodation suitable for -
If you need to park a vehicle and want to be out side the central business district, in a one or two level building, them this option may suit you.
Hostels & Backpackers
The budget priced Auckland accommodation option, includes shared accommodation, in a hostel, lodge, or “hotel” where the emphasis is on the active traveling experience, facilitating cultural and social interaction for like-minded guests. The guests are predominantly in a young age group.
Most offer a mixture of dormitories, double, twin and single rooms. Some rooms may include linen; otherwise this can be hired. Some rooms may also have TVs, fridges, tea and coffee and storage facilities.
Facilities such as kitchens, bathrooms, lounges and laundries are usually shared, although private and en-suite bathrooms are sometimes available. Properties range from small converted houses to large hotel-like establishments. If you want the best rooms, you usually need to book ahead or arrive in the afternoon and chose from what’s available. At some areas at busy times of the year, you may find they’re full by early evening.
If you have a vehicle that needs parking space, it is usually easier to find street parking in the suburbs than the central city. Parking is often free in the suburbs, while you may have to pay in the central city. And the parking wardens are efficient, so don’t be tempted to ignore the parking restriction signs, or you are likely to get a ticket, of towed away.
Auckland accommodation suitable for -
Budget minded people with or without a vehicle parking requirement, who don’t mind sharing facilities with everyone.
Holiday Parks & Camping grounds -
Generally the cheapest options for Auckland accommodation are in this category, which includes: camping, cabins, caravans and overnight camper van parking, in camping grounds and motor camps. Some camp grounds are located adjacent to beaches or other attractive natural features.
All properties provide communal kitchens, toilets, showers and laundries. At some Auckland accommodation establishments also provide a variety of the following additional features.
Camping Sites -
Guests can choose between powered and non-powered sites for tents and camper vans, and use communal facilities. Some parks also offer en-suite sites with water, drainage and private facilities.
Caravans –
Parked on site which may have either gas or electric cooking facilities, but usually no bedding.
Standard Cabins -
Provide beds or bunks, and bedding is often available for hire. Guests use communal toilets, showers, laundry and cooking facilities.
Kitchen Cabins -
Provide hot and cold water and cooking facilities and equipment. Bedding is usually available for hire.
En-suite Units -
Have their own shower and toilet. Guests use communal cooking facilities.
Self Contained Units -
Provide TV, equipped kitchen, shower and toilet, often with more than one bedroom. Bedding is provided or available for hire.
Park Motels -
Provide TV, equipped kitchen, shower and toilet, or a similar unit with a tea/coffee-making facilities only. Full bedding and towels are provided.
Lodges/Group Accommodation -
May vary from bunk rooms to en-suite rooms. Communal facilities are in the same building. Pillows and mattresses are supplied.
